The Desert Highlands Association is searching for an experienced, enthusiastic, and forward thinking Fitness and Wellness professional with exceptional leadership skills to join their team of tenured leaders as their next Wellness Director. Private Club or Resort background is preferred but not required. THE DESERT HIGHLANDS ASSOCIATION DHA has been recognized as one of America's Healthiest Clubs! This distinction is awarded to a small percentage of Private Clubs who achieve an established Health Score based on industry standards. The DHA 7,700 square foot Pavilion Fitness Center, massage services and pool that caters to Members' health and well-being. Members take advantage of the fully equipped fitness center. In 2021, the club updated the Fitness Center with all new state of the art Matrix equipment. Personal training and wellness programs throughout the year include retreats, fitness workshops and nutrition seminars. Set on 850 acres of lush Sonoran Desert, the community and the Club have been recognized by Platinum Clubs of America as being among the top 3 percent in the country. Membership at Desert Highlands is tied to property ownership, so all members have a vested interest in the success of both the Club and the community as a whole. Members have continually supported the updating and enhancement of club and community amenities while maintaining the overall ambiance, sense of community and vision that make Desert Highlands such a special place. Wellness Director Overview/ Job Description The Wellness Director reports directly to the GM/ Chief Operating Officer and works closely with the Fitness Committee. Position manages all aspects of the fitness and wellness operation and programming in the Desert Highlands community - including the 7,700 square foot Fitness and Wellness Center. Oversees and develops all employees including trainers, instructors, massage therapists, and floor attendants. Essential Job Functions: Treats staff with respect and provides appropriate training and leadership to ensure all members and guests, receive exemplary service and are provided with accurate and timely information to enhance their wellness experience. Develops and monitors programs and activities to create Member interest and exceed their expectations, while maximizing the Fitness Center facilities and other suitable locations throughout the community. Thoughtfully prepares articles/ videos for the DH Member news - emphasizing wellness, nutrition, injury prevention and recovery, while marketing personal training, programs and activities. Coordinates special fitness and wellness programs (i.e., fitness & wellness seminars, group hikes, weekly walks, outdoor yoga). Assists Members in developing health and wellness programs to achieve their personal wellness goals. Provides orientation and instructions to members, dependent children, and guests for the proper use of the facility equipment. Delivers world class fitness and wellness instruction. Ensures all equipment is properly maintained and the Center is clean, meets sanitation requirements, and is free of hazards. Ensures locker rooms are maintained to standards: hygiene supplies stocked, towels clean and plentiful, areas clean and free of debris, etc. Monitors daily use of the facility by members and guests, training sessions, massage services, group class participation. Creates reports and responds to questions by the COO and/or Board of Directors. Seeks out opportunities to enhance member amenities to deliver an elevated level of wellness experience. Maintains consistently positive, pleasant, and informative communication with all members and guests. Develops budget for department; monitors financial information and takes action as necessary to help assure that budget goals are met. Process daily invoices for members. (i.e., guest fees, training sessions, group classes, massage services). Monitors inventory of all supplies monthly, orders as necessary. Creates and oversees group exercise class schedule. Coordinates employee schedules to deliver a consistently high level of personalized service. Effectively coach and mentor employees; proactively support employee involvement and development; counsel employees on performance standards; conduct timely performance reviews. Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe working environment, with continual emphasis on promoting employee health and safety. As opportunities arise, advise and provide training to employees and colleagues in proper safety techniques. QUALIFICATIONS: Present a positive, professional image; excellent leadership skills required. Considered an expert in the wellness and fitness field - respected by industry peers. Must be self-motivated and able to provide excellent customer service to a high-end clientele. Proven track record for creating and delivering innovative wellness programming and activities. Must demonstrate appropriate analytical skills, attention to detail, organizational and project management skills. Must have superior interpersonal as well as written and oral communication skills. Participative management style, using a "hands-on" approach to build morale and spirit, while motivating team members to work together to achieve goals. Must be able to rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Ability to make good decisions and enforce company policies in accordance with applicable regulations and procedures. Identify strategies for cost containment, plan design and implementation of best practices. Reliable and predictable attendance is required. Capable of facilitating discussion between individuals with differing perspectives. Experience confronting performance issues as well as giving rewards and recognition. Experience managing a team through delegation and feedback. Creates realistic plans that support organizational goals. Effectively allocates resources and time. Must be able to prioritize tasks and work well under pressure and deal with stressful situations. Computer literate in Microsoft Office Word, Excel and experience with Club Essentials a plus. Ability to work with general office equipment such as a personal computer, laptop, and keyboard, facsimile machines, and photocopier. Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions; Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards. Preferred: Certified from a national organization in personal training or group exercise training, such as American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), or American Council on Exercise Certification (ACE). Continuing education in Nutrition, Sports Recreation, Kinesiology, General Business, Golf, Anti-Aging, Holistic Health or related fields a plus. Previous involvement in major renovation. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE Bachelor's Degree or equivalent and a minimum of 5-7 years as a manager or assistant manager for a fitness or health center or equivalent combination of experience and education. CPR and AED certification or obtain upon hire. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT Position is in a Fitness Center located in a private residential community in North Scottsdale, AZ. Must be able to frequently sit, stand, bend, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, and walk. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., and to lift overhead and push/pull, move lighter objects. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Salary and Benefits Salary is commensurate with experience and comes with a competitive bonus structure.
